Old Ebbitt Grill

Old Ebbitt Grill

My assistant Annette and I were attending a conference in Washington D.C. and by the time we made it back to our hotel it was close to 9 pm. We still needed to get something to eat and Annette suggested a place her husband had heard about called Old Ebbitt Grill. It’s been around since 1856 and located walking distance to the White House. It was a Thursday night – we arrived to the restaurant around 10 pm and the place was packed! People were coming in and meeting up with friends at the bar for a drink. The place has a special energy throughout.

The building and decor are beautiful! Despite the crowd, we were impressed with how quickly our food arrived. Our waitress Maddie was amazing! She was super friendly, helped us make the right selections and checked on us throughout the meal!

The restaurant is famous for a lot of things but vegan food is not one of them. In honesty, I was a little worried when we checked out the menu online but figured I could at least find a salad there. Maddie suggested the Charred Summer Vegetable entree. I did not think that the name or description sounded that great but she assured me that I would not be sorry and this dish did not disappoint!  I think even a non-vegan would enjoy it as a light lunch or dinner.

I found out that they buy their produce from local farms and only use fresh, high-quality fruits and vegetables. They source much of their meat, poultry and seafood direct from its native region.

Annette ordered the halibut dish, which came with herb spatzlle, summer squash, zucchini, cherry tomatoes and lemon confit. She was a bit surprised to be asked how she would like his fish cooked, as if it were a steak. Perhaps it’s an East Coast thing but as Californians, we’ve never been asked this question. She asked for it “well-cooked” and the plate arrived perfectly done. She also had the sangria and said it was one of the best she has tried. We were both very happy we didn’t miss visiting this incredible restaurant during our visit.
